Water Mineral Analysis (WMA)
Elements in water can cause health problems and plumbing
problems in the home. Lead
is known to influence brain activity, causing learning disabilities. Lead pipes or lead
connectors have been responsible for lead poisoning in humans. Excess copper has
been linked to migraines, arthritis, emotional disturbances and even cancer. Sources of
copper in drinking water are copper pipes and copper sulfite (an algaecide). High silicon
levels may be due to traces of sand or rock, while high sodium levels are found
in "softened" water, and may contribute to heart disease. Long-term exposure to mercury
can cause loss of memory, nervousness, irritability, lack of energy, fever, chills,
renal damage and more. Aluminum is commonly used to "clear" water of
flocculent particles, and excess exposure has been linked to brain disorders such as
hyperactivity and Alzheimers disease. Arsenic occurs naturally and can cause
liver and kidney damage. High manganese or iron causes unwanted staining,
and encourages bacteria growth. With wells, manganese and iron can come from subsurface
waters. In older homes, these two elements can come from pipes or iron-related bacteria. |
Sampling Procedure
S To test the
content of your well or city water, flush the water for 5 to 10 minutes before collecting.
Rinse the sample container* several times with the water to be tested, fill and close
tightly.
S To find out if
pipes or filtering systems are contributing to poor water quality, sample the water in the
morning, before any flushing has been done. Have a clean sample container ready, fill and
close tightly.
S For bacteria
testing, water must be collected in a sterilized container and brought in for testing as
soon as possible (preferably within 6 hours after water has been collected).*TMI supplies all sampling containers as part of the
analysis cost. |
